Best Photography Gear For 2018Photography Gear
Being a professional photographer has less to do with your equipment, and more to do with your undeniable skills. However, investing in high-quality equipment sure makes getting those perfect shots even easier. As we roll into 2018, we had to take a step back to awe in the glory of technology and all of the amazing photography gear that’s available to us today. The selection has literally never been better.
2018 is your year to shine, whether you’re upgrading your equipment or looking to spruce up your accessories, we have you covered.
Competition is fierce. With so many amazing cameras, how do you choose? DSLRs and mirrorless camera gaps have basically closed, and every top-rated camera can perform just as good as the next. If you want our honest opinion, you really can’t go wrong with whichever camera you choose. They all check the boxes regarding image quality, functionality, and features. Essentially, it all comes down to handling aspects and your preferences. Test try your top picks and see how they feel in your hands. Also, take into consideration which lenses you currently own/if they’re compatible, or if you’re willing to upgrade lenses too.
Let’s dive in:
Nikon D850 – It simply wouldn’t be a ‘best camera’ list without mention of the Nikon D800 series. The Nikon D850 is in our opinion, the best Nikon camera ever released. With impressively high megapixels (47.5), 4K time-lapse movies, and amazing auto-focus you can’t go wrong. It also boasts an outstanding battery and a tilting LCD touchscreen on the back. This camera will take your business and photos to the next level.
Canon 5D Mark IV – Since the original 5D release back in 2005, a lot of welcome changes have been made. The Canon 5D Mark IV features a 30.4-megapixel full-frame sensor and highly-detailed 4k video. Focus accuracy is better than ever with a refined 61-point AF system and Dual Pixel CMOS AF for a super quick and smooth video and live-view shooting. Enjoy fast operating and continuous shooting speeds of up to 7.0 fps1. The easy-to-navigate touch LCD panel makes using the GPS and Wi-Fi a breeze. What’s not to like?
Sony A7R III – Meet your new best friend. This sleek powerhouse was just announced in October of 2017, and it looks like it will possibly be the best camera of 2018. The Sony A7R III features 42.4 MP back-illuminated sensors that produce excellent image quality and high ISO performance. You’ll also find dual SD media card slots, in-body image stabilisation, improved auto-focus, and 10 frames per second shooting mode with continuous and accurate AF/AE in mechanical or silent shutter mode. This camera is great for shooting everything. Whether you love landscapes, weddings, pets, or live sports, Sony A7R III won’t let you down.
High-quality lenses can make or break your precious photos. We’ll let you in on a little secret…no matter what camera you have, it all comes down to your lenses. If you’re on the fence about upgrading between a new camera or lenses, go with lenses. They can be used for many years and perform great if you keep them in superior condition. Remember, choose your lenses based on what you’re shooting modes are.
Canon – There are so many great Canon options, for so many types of photography. These are great for landscapes and portraits.
- Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 III
- Canon 85mm f/1.4
Nikon – If you shoot with Nikon, this new lens is great for landscapes and night photography.
- Nikon 28mm f/1.4
Sony – These pair up great with the new A7R III. Sony lenses continue to improve and impress us.
- Sony 16-35mm f/2.8
- Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6
Take into consideration the height and weight range you’re looking for. A light tripod may be easy to lug around, but not stable in windy or unpredictable conditions. A tall tripod will get you killer angles, but may not be compact enough for your liking. Choose a tripod based on your shooting needs.
Feisol CT3442 – Professional, affordable, and lightweight. (£)
Gitzo GK2545T – Compact and strong. (££)
Really Right Stuff TVC-34L – Pricey, but worth the splurge. (£££)
Our tip? Buy the largest diameter filter you can. You’ll have filters to fit any size lens for now and the future, plus all you will need is the appropriately sized up step-up ring, rather than blowing money on a whole new filter.
Neutral density and circular polarised filters are all landscape photographers need. Always remember, you get what you pay for.
